It was a highly engaging and well-attended discussion that brought together many members and leaders of Edmonton’s Somali community. The event created an important platform for dialogue, connection, and shared understanding among participants from diverse backgrounds.
The meeting focused on key issues affecting the community, including the Alberta referendum and broader immigration-related matters. Participants explored how these topics influence policy, representation, and the future of multicultural communities in the province.
A major part of the discussion highlighted the challenges faced by newcomers—particularly Somali immigrants—in Alberta. These challenges included access to employment, education, social services, and the need for stronger community support systems.
The event was enriched by insightful contributions from guest speakers, including Sharif Haji, the first person of East African descent and the first Somali-Canadian elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. His perspective on leadership and representation inspired many attendees.
Additional valuable insights were provided by Hussein Warsame, professor at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. His academic and professional experience offered a deeper understanding of economic and social issues impacting immigrant communities.
